Course Information

Content: The course presents itself as an introduction to the spiritual reading of the Divine Comedy, and therefore wishes to offer those who attend it tools to grasp the spiritual, intimate aspects of Dante Alighieri’s experience and narrative.

It is not a review of high-school notions of the Divine Comedy, but rather a journey to discover the work’s authentic aim, the one Dante himself indicates in his epistles: to lead people away from sadness and towards happiness.

Learning objectives:

At the end of this course, you will have the keys to explore the Divine Comedy with a new and deeper look. This course will enable you to approach the Comedy as a true spiritual diary, making it more engaging and closer to your own life experience.

First unit: The spiritual reading of the Comedy

In the first unit you will understand what it means to read the Divine Comedy theologically, going beyond the merely literary approach, and you will be able to identify the main reasons why a spiritual reading of the Comedy is possible and necessary for a Christian.

Second unit: The subject of the diary. Dante the castaway

In the second unit, students will be able to recognise the most relevant events in Dante Alighieri's life in order to subsequently relate them to the symbolic-spiritual narrative present in the pages of the Commedia

Third unit: The journey of the diary. Dante Cosmonaut

At the end of the unit, the student will be able to identify the main moral distinctions of the places of Dante's journey in order to recognise them as signs of the path of appropriation of the truths of faith and the mysteries of Christ in the Commedia
