Course Information

Content: In the course ‘How to Read the Bible I – The Senses of Scripture’, you will learn to read and interpret the biblical text according to its two senses: the literal sense and the spiritual sense. The main sources of study will be the Bible and numbers 101-119 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. This knowledge will help you better understand the biblical foundation of the Catholic faith.

Learning objectives:

The course is divided into three parts. We estimate that you will need 12-16 hours to complete each part, depending on your pace and the level of depth at which you wish to study. Don’t worry, the effort is worth it!

Unit 1: God speaks to man in the way of man

By the end of this unit you will be able to demonstrate that both God and the human authors are true authors of the Bible and, therefore, that it is a divine and human book. You will be able to define what is meant by the literal sense and spiritual sense of the biblical text and explain how God speaks to us through them. Furthermore, you will understand what it means that inspired books teach the truth.

Unit 2: The interpretation of the literal sense

By the end of this unit, you will be able to explain the meaning and importance of the four principles for reading the Bible and be able to apply them to the study of some biblical passages, such as the betrothal of the Virgin Mary, the Last Supper and the genealogy of Jesus.

Unit 3: The interpretation of spiritual meaning

After this unit, you will be able to explain each of the criteria of spiritual interpretation and apply them to the study of the biblical text. In other words, you will know how to read and interpret the Bible as a continuous story, within the living Tradition of the Church and respecting the cohesion of the Catholic faith.

This course is the first in a series of three you can ask for more information!
